Endangered Alphabets: Why Are They So Important?

Tim Brookes , veteran NPR "Weekend Edition Sunday" commentator,

storyteller, teacher, and author of 18 books will speak about the Endangered

Alphabets Project which he founded in 2013 to document and save threatened

writing systems. This talk accompanies an exhibition of exquisite carvings that

introduce unfamiliar scripts, raising questions about their cultures of origin, and the

profound relationship between a people and their writing.

*A lot of attention is (finally) being paid to endangered languages, but virtually none to endangered writing systems. Yet as many as 90% of the world's scripts are marginalized, suppressed, or actively banned--and with them the entire written record of a culture. This talk accompanies an exhibition of exquisite carvings that introduce unfamiliar scripts, raising questions about their cultures of origin, and the profound relationship between a people and their writing.
